March 15 – Training your own talent is no guarantee of success at club level though the stats suggest that it gives a slight advantage. Players who spent at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21 in the club accounted for almost 25% of champion winning team squads, compared to only about 20% for all clubs surveyed.
But overall the data for club trained players in first team squads shows a decline since 2009 in the 31 European top divisions surveyed by the CIES Football Observatory. Read more …

May 7- Manchester City, one of the richest clubs in world football courtesy of Middle East funding, have been banned from signing academy players for an initial 12 months and fined £300,000 for breaching rules governing youth transfers – colloquially known as “tapping up.”
The club were given a two-year ban, the second year of which was suspended for three years, and means they cannot sign youngsters aged between 10 and 18 who have been registered with other Premier League or English Football League clubs while the restriction is in force. Read more …

The English Football League will share £2.25 million over three seasons with clubs that give young, domestic talent the chance to play in the first team. This season, 8% of all appearances in the EFL have been made by English players under the age of 21, while 14 of England's Euro 2016 squad spent time in an EFL academy. The 'EFL Futures' plan will financially incentivize clubs to give even more chances to English U21s, with Cardiff and Newport being rewarded for promoting Welsh talent.
